The bottom overlay is notched into the vertical tongue-and-groove overlay. Standard on tongue-and groove (5-Layer) and grooved MDO (4-Layer) configurations.

Understanding which wood species works best in each type of environment or situation is the first step in ensuring a long-lasting door. Although design elements such as grain and wood color are a factor in choosing a wood species, it is also important to consider the climate, location, and finish requirements. All wood species interact differently with their environment as well as with finish products such as stain or paint. Understanding each species and its distinct color, durability characteristics, and interaction with finish types will help you choose the right species for the project.

REDWOOD:

• Red to pink color heartwood.
• Resistance to decay and insects.
• Can be stained or painted; contains tannic acid and requires the use of tannin- blocking primer to avoid discoloration when it comes into contact with moisture.
• Tip: Good option for regions with a lot of moisture.

WESTERN RED CEDAR:

• Wide variation from nearly white to pink to dark brown, often within the same board. Light, Mixed, or Dark is available as an option.
• Cedar withstands the natural elements.
• Can be stained or painted; contains tannic acid and requires the use of tannin-blocking primer to avoid discoloration when it comes into contact with moisture.
• Tip: Cedar performs well in almost any environment.

HEMLOCK:

• Yellowish white color, consistent tone and grain.
• Strongest wood species in the Clopay line.
• Rot-resistant but low resistance to environmental change.
• Tip: Economical wood choice and the best solution to match an existing stain.

LUAN PLYWOOD:

• Economical alternative to wood panels.
• Can be stained or painted. Luan is also known as imported hardwood.

DOUGLAS FIR:

• Ranges in color from yellowish-tan to a light brown.
• It has a straight grain pattern with some waves or spiral designs with medium to coarse texture.
• Stable and strong throughout environmental changes.

MDO (MEDIUM DENSITY OVERLAY PLYWOOD):

• Core material, overlaid with a pressed fiber material.
• Grooved or smooth panel.
• Cannot be stained.
• Tip: Ideal for a grain-free, professional quality paint finish.

MDF (MEDIUM DENSITY FIBERBOARD) AND HARDBOARD

• Wood fibers glued together with resin, heat and pressure.
• Cannot be stained.
• Tip: Appropriate for many applications because it is smooth, uniform and will not warp.

MERANTI:

• Reddish brown coloration with an even, consistent grain.
• Strong wood, can be compared to the strength of Hemlock.
• Paintable or stainable.
• Tip: The smooth grain is ideal for staining.
