Winter is on its way and with it all the pleasures of the holidays, beautiful snowy days and warm nights with family and friends. The last thing you want to think about are winter energy bills.

Keep warm this winter and save energy at the same time.

We’ve put together a few tips to save some money and conserve energy.

-To make sure your heating system is operating at its most efficient, it’s a good idea to have a contractor perform a routine check-up and any necessary maintenance on the equipment before freezing weather drives up your energy bill.

Seal gaps and cracks in doorways and windows. Not only does cold air enter a home through these spaces it also causes your home’s comfort system to work overtime. Be sure and check the door that goes from your garage to your home as cold air can enter from there as well.

-Check your ductwork for leaks as well. Warm air can leak out where you don’t want it and cold air can enter in as well.

-It’s nice to be warm and toasty but winter is for sweaters and fleece so turn down your thermostat. For every degree you lower your heat in the 60-degree to 70-degree range, you’ll save up to 5 percent on heating costs.

-Change or vacuum air filters regularly. Clogged and dirty filters not only reduce airflow but also put undue stress on your heating and air conditioning units. This can even damage the units resulting in an expensive visit from your HVAC company.

-Put weather stripping on your garage doors to keep cold air out. Make sure the garage door is closed before entering your home to reduce the amount of cold air that follows you inside.

These energy saving tips can keep you and your family more comfortable, your energy costs down, and reduce your emissions all at the same time. If your garage door has seen better days it may be leaking energy far more than you realize so it may be time to replace it.
