So you have a garage full of boxes and bags of items that you no longer want or need. A garage sale is a great way to get rid of those things and try to make a little bit of money before donating everything. Here are a few tips that will help turn your next garage sale into a success.

Have a successful garage sale in Kansas City

Spread the Word

Get the word out first, and do it well in advance. Utilize online social networking sites, and post on Craigslist, Facebook and any local community pages. One day before the sale, put up fliers and signs on nearby street corners, and be sure to use large print and bright colors. Consider tying some balloons to the signs to grab attention.

Draw Them In

Once you’ve got their attention, you need to get them out of their cars. Put larger items closer to the road to make them noticeable. Have signs with large lettering identifying groupings of similar items, such as kitchen items, books or toys. This will make it easy for potential buyers to find what they need.

Declutter

Make displays appealing by using clotheslines and pretty tablecloths. Design your sale area instead of just randomly setting things out. For instance, if you have a bunch of dishes, glasses and silverware to sell, consider putting a nice tablecloth out and using those items for place settings. Put some flowers in a vase you want to sell, and use it as a centerpiece. Try thinking of the sale area as a room in your home, and design it to be pretty and inviting.

Give a Little to Make a Little

Put a box or two of free items close to the curb and in view of passing cars, and have it well-marked. People love free items and will have a harde time passing by without taking a peek.

Mark it All & Keep it Low

Have everything marked to avoid excessive price inquiries. If you have a lot of little items for the same price and don’t feel like tagging each one, price the box and throw all of those items in it. Remember that people are shopping for bargains. If you want to make more money on individual pieces, use Craigslist or Ebay— not your garage sale. Keep it cheap, and be willing to haggle.

Offer Some Munchies

Consider making lemonade, cookies, popcorn, or other inexpensive treats, and set them out for everyone to enjoy in a shady area. The longer they’re there, the more likely they are to purchase something.
